Week 9. Reflections

"I believe that the brain has evolved over millions of years to be responsive to difficult kinds of content in the world. Language content, musical content, numerical content, etc. …"

Howard Gardner

All people are remarkable, incomparable, special, individual, and unique. According to Howard Gardner, Professor of Cognition and Education, who developed the theory of multiple intelligences, there is an Einstein, Van Gogh, Mozart, Mendeleev, Shakespeare, Pythagoras, Oprah, in all of us, but at a different rate.

As Thomas Edison said “Genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration”. But sometimes this 1% opens the huge potential for new discoveries, brilliant masterpieces, and human evolution in general. Who is to open our talents if not our parents, our teachers, our friends and enemies, and finally us?! When I was a small girl I had the role of the teacher in almost all the games. I think that my profession is not a coincidence. These things should also be taken into consideration. This is the time when this 1% can be discovered.

To discover what types of intelligences are better developed in me I, following Courtney’s example, decided to pass the test in order to find out about my learning style, from www.edutopia.org.

The third place has interpersonal intelligence – 56%.
The second place goes to linguistic intelligence – 67%.
The winner is intrapersonal intelligence – 69%.

I don’t think that the human being is the center of the universe, we are just a small part of it, but the human trace can be seen from the open space.

To find more about multiple intelligence it is worth reading the article Learning Styles and Strategies, by Richard M. Felder, where the following types of learners were mentioned:
·         Active – Reflective
·         Sensing – Intuitive
·         Visual – Verbal
·         Sequential – Global

Some strategies help one type of learners, but at the same time confuse the representatives of the other type. The perfect solution is to have a balance between different styles and gradually develop the weaker.

Today I uploaded my final project report on Courtney’s wiki. Almost all of my colleagues have already submitted the reports. They did a great job! Every project report is very special. I want to read them during my winter holidays.

Until the beginning of our course “Building Teaching Skills Through the Interactive Web” I couldn’t understand how can people make friends, fall in love, get married through the internet. They don’t see each other, don’t shake hands, don’t hug, don’t smile to each other, don’t cry on someone’s shoulder, but now I know that it is possible. These nine weeks is like an entire life and a single moment.

I shall miss everyone so much!

  1. Dear Ina,
Hi.I had a glance at your post, which is scholarly and interesting to read. You have given comment with a balanced perspective and the last part is really conclusive where you have said that everything is possible through internet including love-making and marriage without seeing each other. In the virtual world, it is possible to fall in love but, can two persons get married online?Ha...ha...interesting...marriage in absentia...
    Best wishes.

  2. Hi, Ina.

I have enjoyed studying with you so much the past 9 weeks. I have found that you are very warm and caring, and now I have proof that you are an intrapersonal learner, showing that you reflect and take time to work out human relationships!

I hope that you did well on your final project. Our projects were similar in that both addressed plagiarism, so I hope that we really can change things in our universities and in our countries!

Please do stay in touch! I will miss the weekly blog of yours!

    Take care.

    1. Hi, Evelyn.

It was my pleasure studying with you and from you, as you are an interpersonal learner, very bright and easy-going. I wish I could attend your lesson. You must be very dynamic inside and outside the class.

I hope my project is fine. I plan to make a webquest on plagiarism, and some activities or tests. I liked your exercises, and I attached the link of Macau University to my Delicious.

I will stay in touch as due to you, our peers and Courtney I have changed a lot. I like this new feeling!

  3. Dear Mahesh,

I hope the humanity won't go so far as virtual marriages. What I meant is getting acquainted with people in social networks, after that having the second meeting in the real world. I have such an example in my native city. A girl got married with a man from Canada. They live in Balti (my native city). Thay are very happy. This method is definitely rather risky. But I think that there are more good people than bad.

There was an interview yesterday with Julian Assange, he said that internet is a big power, we must be very careful what we write. I totally agree with him. I don't think internet is the place for personal secrets. It's a place for professional development.

  4. Dear Ina

I can't but agree with Mahesh the way in which you narrated the MI and the rest of the post. There's poetry in what you wrote and I enjoyed.

I'm a true supporter of what online can do for you and am not at all surprised over what you'd discovered. Anything is possible online. The other day I listened to a BBC podcast called 'Don't log off' where Alan Dein attempts to cross the world on a late-night excursion via Facebook and Skype.

You too can listen to it if you want here: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/worldservice/docarchive/docarchive_20121013-0905a.mp3.

It shares some of the concerns that you'd raised.

All the best with your PD online.

    Best, Cherry.

    1. Dear Cherry,

Thank you for the link. I have been listening to the BBC since I was a students.

It is hard not to log off 24 hours a day, and to be in touch with the world. But it is an interesting experiment. By the way, we didn't exchange our Skype and Facebook addresses. We should.

It's interesting to learn that you'd been listening to BBC since school - though not from school I started listening to World Service from college. Right now I subscribe to a whole range of podcasts and play it through my MP3 player on the move or while doing something.

I'll message you through Nicenet my FB n Skype credentials so that we can be in touch beyond the period of the course.

    3. Hi Cherry,

When I was a students I listened to 6.45 audio books. I remember listening to Alias Grey, by Margaret Atwood. I was delighted to listen to it as my gratuation paper is on this book.

Nowadays I listen to the BBC online, as I can't find its radio post in Moldova. It is probably not broadcasted any more. Again Global Network saves me.

I will be happy to get your contacts.

    4. Hello again

      What's 6.45 audio book?

My BBC online is no more audible! Don't know why! I'd posted a FB update to check whether the problem is local or global.

My message through Nicenet on your way.

      Best, Cherry.

    5. Hi Cherry,

I didn't express myself clearly. There was a program where the professional actor,as I suppose, was reading literature.

I can't find the BBC radio channel about a year or so. As far as I know, the BBC in Russia (Russian post)was closed several years ago. I also listened to it, because I was interested to listen to different comments. I listen to BBC only on the internet.

Thank you for sharing your contacts.

  5. Dear Ina,

The way you present your post includes visual and reflective learners; this proves that even teachers enjoy diagrams or images! Thank you for an appealing post as usual!
Two things attracted my attention; one, your percentage on linguistic intelligence is identical to mine;67%
another interesting fact that I share with you is that I myself had the same passion from the time I was very young as I used to gather my siblings and the neighbors and play school! I even gave them new names, took attendance and required homework! I loved the game and I still do!

    Best,

    Paula

    1. Dear Paula,

I consider that we should activate different learnning styles during the lessons. I want both my visual and verbal learners to be happy.

I used to have a special register to put down the marks for my "students". I really enjoyed playing and I often use games during the lessons. It is not only fun, but filling in the gap between theory and practice.

  6. Hi Ina

I was eagerly waiting to read your Quotation but I got a lot more in bargain. You have created a perfect balance of mind and heart in your post.

Your observations about internet are very interesting.

Now,Thanks to internet, all of us have one common experience of Virtual learning where we sailed together to same destination from different locations.

This has been a rewarding and enlightening journey for everyone. But the good thing is that we can remain in touch through internet in this virtual world even if we meet in real world.

I would like to thank you again for your valuable inputs on my project report.

    Regards

    Raj

    1. Hi Raj,

I love quotes. There is so much sence in just one sentence.

You are as sharp as a needle. I need to feel something, then I start writing. My husband sometimes complains that he has to wait for me. This course, my dear colleagues, Courtney inspire me to write.

I hope that our "enlightening journey" won't stop with this course. We should carry on sharing ideas in this virtual world.

  7. Dear Ina,

I always enjoy reading your blog posts. This week's post is also very interesting and you present it so well.

We all are different types of learners and teachers and the awareness of our styles definitely helps us to be better learners and teachers.

I hope that you will continue writing your blog even after the course so that we can exchange ideas.

    Good luck and good bye!

We definitely should continue our fruitful collaboration. We are very different, but sharing makes us richer, as we have different perspectives.

I will continue blogging. I think I need to give another title to it. What do you think?
